Last night the general membership of the Belize Communication Workers Union were forced off the BTL St. Thomas Street compound, and ended up having a meeting on the street side. That meeting was to plot a course of action in response to management firing 3 members of the union without first consulting with that union.
After the meeting the unionists decided that they would be moving toward industrial action. During the course of the day today however that stance was softened a bit with the union giving management until the end of the workday to meet with them. But that didn't happen, and now they've reverted to the hard line and that is that tomorrow the union will be serving management with a notice of strike action.
By law they are to give notice of 21 days which means that from the day of serving the notice they have to time to either go on strike or expect that management call them in for a meeting. We'll keep you posted on how it develops.
