Who's going to be picking up your garbage next year? Well right now that's anyone's guess because the City Council and Waste Control are pitched in a dispute that looks like it's headed for court.
In yesterday's _Guardian Newspape_r, the Belize City Council announced that it was canceling its contract with Belize Waste Control to pick up the city's waste. The contract doesn't expire until December 4th but the Council decided on may 3rd not to renew it. The Council says it could do well with the $1.4 million paid annually to Waste Control and that they could do a better job. Well today Belize Waste Control fired back.
In a letter released to the media this afternoon Waste Control's General Manager George Lamb says that on May 8th his company exercised its option to renew the garbage collection contract it has with the City Council for another ten years. And under the agreement, Lamb says the Waste Control has a valid contract with the City Council until December of 2017, not 2007. Lamb says under the contract, any dispute should be taken to arbitration. He closes with, "Belize Waste Control has put in the hands of its attorneys this shameful abuse of power by the Belize City Council."
