The St. Francis Xavier Credit Union in Corozal with assets of $39 million it's the second largest in the country. But it's also the most unstable. And the hostility between the board and the management has forced the Registrar of Credit Unions Sydney Campbell to threaten to de-register the credit union if it continues. Well today, the management called on members to join in a peaceful demonstration in front of the Credit Union.
After the Registrar's threat, we expected fireworks, but there were none. A few hundred members showed up and after that event, the General Manager Vincente Canul had a low-key press conference. "The board can come anytime, anytime in the Credit Union, as long as I am notified that they are coming to have a meeting or for any other reason. The problem is that when they come, I don't know that they are coming. They don't give us notice, they just come in and they bring the media and that is what I am against because I am the general manager and I should know that the board is coming for a meeting and what time, what is the agenda of the meeting, what is the purpose of the meeting. They shouldn't just come like that and want to force themselves in. That is where we have our problem. I have never disobeyed directives as such."

"So your position is that if the board or Miss West calls and says listen Mr. Canul, me and my board would like to come over for whatever reasons, as long as you are notified, you are willing to back off from stance?
Vicente Canul,
"Of course. I am ready to comply with the directives so long as they notify ahead of time. If they say, 'Mr. Canul we are coming Wednesday, Mrs. West will sign checks for an hour and then after that we are going to have a meeting with you,' perfect. But they just come and distract and I don't know what they are here for so I will tell the security officer, allow Mrs. West in but I don't know what the whole board is here for."
Canul concluded that it's just a matter of courtesy that he be notified.
