The launch of the Salvation Army kettle appeal is the one sure sign that Christmas is around the corner on the calendar. The bells began ringing this morning on Albert Street and 7NEWS was there.
Keith Swift Reporting,
The bells on kettles began ringing on Albert Street this morning as the salvation army launched its annual Christmas kettle appeal. Major Errol Robateau says this year's target is $30,000.
Major Errol Robeateau, Salvation Army
"We are only depending on the public not to fail us, they've never failed us in the past and we are hoping that they will not fail us again. We've set our target for $30,000 this year from the kettles. Last year we got $24,400 and about a few cents and we believe that with the help of the public and the help of our volunteers, we can do it again this year.
We need to help each other. This is what life is all about. The Bible tells us that man should not live alone. It is not good for man to be alone and that goes about caring and helping for each other. All I am asking is that if God blesses us, let us share some of our blessings."
The guest speaker at this morning's launch was Rene Villanueva Sr.
Rene Villanueva Sr., Guest Speaker
"This Christmas appeal is always close to my heart. I've attended previous launchings before, it's the first time I've been asked to be the guest speaker at a launching and like I said I'm extremely honored by it. With regards to the second part of your question, which is how do I feel about giving especially in these hard times, it is basically during these hard times that we are supposed to reach out and help others."
The appeal runs up until Christmas Eve. The kettles will be in front of Brodies, Romac's, Sav-U, San Cas Plaza, Courts Belize, and Brodies on the Northern Highway. The Salvation Army also needs toys. As usual, the funds raised will be used to host the Army's annual Christmas party which caters to one thousand children.
