And another project the City Council will introduce this year is electric buses. You've been hearing about it for a while, but the mayor says that by June, you'll be seeing them. He also added that they've got to do something about those pothole-filled city roads before the buses hit the streets.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"Actually we had a very good session with the bus operators recently. again, we are not out here to take anybody out of business, we want them to be partners but first we have to get the required data to really bring them in and have them be partners in this great opportunity to really transform the transport system in the city."
Courtney Menzies:
"What's the timeline looking like?"
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"We are expecting those buses to be in the June area, around midyear. Procurement of the buses is well underway with the UNDP and so we are confident that this program will be launched in the middle of the year."
Courtney Menzies:
"And in that time will there be- I know you're upgrading the Lake I area, but we know different streets around Belize City are really damaged, will you be upgrading those streets to accommodate the buses?"
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"We have a lot of streets in the city, we have over 700 streets, we certainly want to ensure that the route that those buses will be on is retrofitted, rehabilitated so that it's a smooth ride for the buses."
