Last night on the news you heard Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai discuss the imminent banana shortage. He cited fuel prices and the cost of storage becoming prohibitive.

Now, the bananas Belizeans enjoy, the majority of them, are freebies that have been rejected for international export. So, suppliers get them for free and then sell them on the cheap, 10 for a dollars. But, that could be changing due to rising fuel prices and other cost increases.

This afternoon 7News went out to City's fruit and vegetable markets to find out more about the bottom line on bananas, and why you're about to get far less of them for a dollar - if you're lucky to get them at all.

At the current price, consumers can expect to buy 6 bananas for $1.
