Earlier in the news we told you about Minister Mai's trip to Mexico. Well, he also recently visited Honduras, and came back with big plans for Belize. While he takes inspiration from their sweet potato industry, he also says they can help with improving our dairy industry.
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture

"Honduras is huge in sweet potato, they export to Europe, sweet potatoes are something that grows in Belize and plantains, green plantains, right? So we look at both of those crops. We look at their costs, but also the problems they're having, what are the constraints in terms of trade and diseases and so on. And, uh, we also visited Zamorano because Zamorano has a very good, uh, dairy product, um, component. They manufacture their cheeses, they manufacture their creams, their milk, ice cream, and so on. And we have had complaints on the public that, you know, for us to, for our product to hit the market, well, we need to make certain improvements. And so we met with the agronomist that deals with dairy. And um, he explained to us that for us to enhance our cheeses, he would need to come to Belize and make an assessment of our processing facilities, beginning in the field is because the quality of cheese begins in the field with the pasture and the cow, and then he will follow the trail all the way up to the closing plant, and then do an assessment of what we are doing, evaluate what they're doing, and then go back to Honduras. And then he will design a course for our processors. And then we send the processors to Honduras, they take a three to four week course on how to improve their cheeses. You will understand that we have a number of processing plants in the country. Each may have a different requirement, a need. So it have to be, uh, tailored for them."
