Today, the Prime Minister conceded that growth is tapering off - and explained that it is owing to downturns in the primary, agricultural sector:
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"It will be difficult for us to able to keep 15% and 12% growth this was forecasted that it was going to slow down and in our first quarter we had about 12% and now in the second Quarter a lot of it if you look at it is that the agricultural commodities are not doing well. Citrus is at its lowest as it is right now the government and ministry of agriculture are working with CPBL and the Curtis growers association trying to come up with a plan to be able to revive. And shrimp is finally starting to come out of its challenges from the early mortality syndrome bananas with sigatoka disease that has been affecting them for the past year or so again it's starting to go up so we were expecting some of this and as a government now we are just planning a meeting on Friday with a small group to see what are the things we need to do to continue to have growth."
