If you went to your Belize Bank ATM today you might have noticed that the 50 cents per transaction fee to withdraw your own money is still there. And there's a reason for that. The Bank today got the High Court to grant an interim injunction restraining the Central Bank from enacting Practice Direction No. 7 of 2023. That's the one which restricts fees and charges that banks can charge you. PD number 7 - as it is known - would have limited the ATM fee to 25 cents per transaction - which the Belize Bank objected to - and asked the court for relief.
But, it may still be implemented - this is only an interim injunction and the full hearing of the Bank's application for judicial review is set for February 12th.
The matter was heard by Justice Nadine Nabie, and the Belize Bank was represented by Godfrey Smith and Hector Guerra while the Central Bank was represented by Yohhahnseh Cave.
