2023: Lowest Murder Count Since 2005, Lowest Murder Rate Since 2000

And while the last weekend of the new year resulted in two deaths as a result of gun violence - only one has been recorded as a murder - and that's the case of Jorge Caceres Lozano. The other case, with Trevor Brown - right now police are saying that may be self defence - but they are awaiting a final decision from the DPP.

But, with the Lozano homicide recorded - that brings it to a total for 2023 of 85 murders - which is the lowest total Belize has recorded since 2005. And the final murder rate per 100,000 residents is at 19.1 - which is the lowest recorded since the year 2000.
