Then on Saturday night, 28-year-old Trevor Brown was ready to celebrate the weekend like most other Belizeans, so he headed to a popular nightclub on Newtown Barracks. But at around 3 the next morning when he was about to leave the club, he was killed right in the parking lot. The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras, but did something happen inside the club that led to his murder? Courtney Menzies has this story.

28-year-old Trevor Brown was behind the wheel of this red vehicle the moment it accidentally bumped into a pickup truck in the parking lot of Thirsty Thursday.

Several men who were outside then enter the lot, and two go by the pickup truck, while the others speak to Brown.

Then they head outside the lot while Brown tries to exit again. Brown turns around in the lot, and then almost hits two of the men near the pickup truck.

Brown gets out of the car, and an exchange of gunfire begins. The other shooter rounds the vehicle and continues to fire at Brown before he finally collapses. The gunman then runs behind the pickup truck.

Brown ultimately succumbed to his injury, and his vehicle is left riddled with bullet holes.

But what led to his altercation at 3 in the morning outside of a popular nightclub?

ACP Hilberto Romero, OCED

"Information received that Trevor Brown had an altercation with another male person at the parking lot and at some point both of them pulled out firearms and fired at each other. Shortly thereafter a male person was apprehended in the Yarborough area and he was found with a gunshot injury to the head. He was taken to the hospital and he is presently admitted receiving treatment. Several expended shells were found at the scene and vehicles were seen with bullet holes. A thorough investigation is being carried out into this incident and statements are being recorded, we have video footage, and these will be forwarded to the DPP for determination. The person that is admitted at the hospital is still there so we await his release to conduct an interview."

And now Brown's family is hoping for justice, but for his mother, it's even tougher since she lives in the US. She said that she'd been feeling uneasy a few days before the incident, and when she saw her brother calling in the middle of the night, she already knew that something had happened to her son.

"A feeling came over me that I don't know what to do, if I'm supposed to scream, if I'm supposed to run, if I'm supposed to cry, I wanted to use the bathroom, I got in the bathroom, I ran out, it's a feeling that I don't want to be wished on my worst enemy. I saw people losing their kid but now that it knocks on my door, the pain is unbearable, it's a pain that I don't want any mother to ever go through because I'm trying to be strong but on the real side, it's not like that."

"I haven't eaten, I tried to sleep, it's the hardest thing to sleep because I close my eyes, I see my son. Me and my son had this bond, so close. We call early in the morning, in the afternoon when I'm at work, in the evening when I get off work before I go to bed."

But despite talking every day, Brown didn't disclose that he'd been having any problems, and he also didn't tell her his plans for the night.

"Of lately, he didn't mention anything like that, but you know sometimes as boys they will tell mothers certain things and they won't tell their mothers certain things because as mothers we worry about everything when it comes to our child and especially the way how Belize is getting right now. My worst fear was to get a phone call like that."

"He knew if he would have said, mommy, I'm going out to party, it wouldn't have been so easy because I would've said, you going out to party at a time like this and you see what's going on in Belize? So they won't say, mommy I'm going out to party, because I would have been the type, that can't work."

And now this grieving mother only has her son's children to remember him by.

"I tell everybody, it's like a dream, although I know he's not here with me no more, it's like I'm in a deep sleep and I'll get out of the sleep and I'll still see my son. Unfortunately, that won't ever happen again but as I said to everybody, he has three beautiful daughters, very intelligent babies, and his memory is going to live through them. I'm going to love on my grandkids the same way I loved on my son and try to give them everything because he was a father figure for his three girls."
