And while newborns were coming into the world at the KHMH on New Year's Day - down the road in front of Santos Diaz on Central American Boulevard - a grizzled veteran was stealing the KREM New Year's classic trophy from the young riders.
John De Long, a perennial contender in Belizean cycling since 2007 claimed his second KREM Classic Trophy in four years when he bested 30 year old Corey Williams in a sprint to the finish.
The cyclist - who is from Pennsylvania in the USA - appeared on Sunup on 7 today where he told the hosts what it was like keeping up with the strong young riders in the race from the Santa Elena border in Corozal to Belize City:
Cory Williams was second, Derrick Chavarria third.
Kaya Cattouse won the Women's Race.
