If you're Generation X or a Millennial, you may remember your parents heading downtown to buy just about anything they needed: Groceries from Brodies or Ro-Mac's, cloth from Mikado, and hardware or housewares from Hofius - even ice cream from Blue Bird's.
But while these businesses are, or were, landmarks on Albert Street, consumer appetites have changed and the downtown area doesn't see the same crowds it used to. As a result, some stores, like Augusto Quan, have had to close down.
And soon, one of the downtown cornerstones, Hofius will close its doors for the last time.
That's right, one of the oldest stores in the entire country is on its last lap, and today confirmed its imminent closure via a statement. But despite the news, Hofius has been etched in Belizean history. Courtney Menzies has this story.
Established in 1892, Hofius and Hildebrandt quickly became a landmark in downtown Belize City. It later rebranded as Hofius Hardware Co, and then just Hofius Limited.
Its peak was during a time when Albert Street was considered prime commercial real estate. But consumer habits have changed, and soon, that proud downtown landmark, Hofius will be closing its doors, leaving Brodies as the only store still open continuously from the 19th century.
The staff of Hofius Limited were informed last Friday that they would be shutting down in mid-2024. According to a statement from the store, it was a joint decision made by the shareholders.
According to the owner, it was not a simple decision to make, and it will definitely impact the Albert Street community. But Hofius' almost 132 years of service, with its reliable and durable hardware and homeware equipment and appliances, won't soon be forgotten.
So, to a large extent the story of Hofius is the story of the commercial evolution of Belize city downtown - from the days when there were no cars on the road, to when wagons and sedans were the mark of modernity.
Hofius' statement emphasizes the privilege it has felt to serve the vibrant community of downtown Belize City, as well as its appreciation to its staff and loyal customers.
Hofius will join other longstanding stores or businesses that have recently closed down, like Bottom Dollar and Smiling Meats.
