The Department of Environment is looking into a suspect development on the south end of Corozal. It's a jetty built form rocks that extends some 300 feet into the sea at the south end of Corozal Town.
It came to public attention when these drone shots were posted today by a community news site named Corozal Daily. According to them, the jetty is in front of a private property and work is continuous. They quote residents as saying that this same construction began a year ago but was stopped by the local authority due to the absence of any permits.
Well, we communicated via WhatsApp with the Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai and he told us that they had issued a stop order to the project previously. He told us that they are now looking into this latest report.
The CEO for Natural Resources also confirmed, quote, "Neither the Lands and Survey department nor our Mining unit has issued any permits for this project."
The Town Board Administrator told us, quote, "The Council is unaware of the project in the Corozal Bay, as it has not been consulted about any marine development. We are also investigating and call on all relevant authorities, including the multi-agency Corozal Bay Advisory Committee, to probe. If anyone breached any laws, we expect the authorities to deal with such actions accordingly."
So, it has no permit, yet work appears ongoing judging by the movements of the excavator in the photos.
We'll keep following up to see what enforcement measures are taken.
