The lights went out last night at 11:00 across most of the country- except for Corozal. So, what caused it? In a release issued by BEL today they stated that "The outage was due to a protective shield wire coming in contact with the transmission line in Orange Walk." That wire is used to protect against lightning strikes.

Power was restored to the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts at around midnight and to the rest of the country by 2:19 a.m. on Thursday. BEL also initiated an emergency power outage again between 2:00 and 3:00 this morning in the Orange Walk district so that they could repair the lightning protective equipment on the transmission line.
