The Court of Appeal has ruled that Minister Jose Mai has to pay the family of Julia Arana 130 thousand dollars plus interest.
In 2016, Mai - who was then an opposition area rep - for Orange Walk South knocked down Arana, a resident from Trial Farm Village. She suffered severe head and bodily injuries, but she survived, and after spending 2 very difficult months at home trying to recover, her health deteriorated, and she passed away.
Her son, elite cyclist Nissan Arana, pursued a private claim against Mai. Justice Courtney Abel ruled in the Arana family's favor and found Mai liable. He was ordered to pay the family over 200,000 dollars in damages.
Well, Mai appealed and today that judgement was handed down. It says that the Appeal is partly allowed as Julia Arana was partially negligent for the accident. She found that Mai was 60% responsible so the award of damages as reduced by 40%.
In total, the court orders Mai to pay damages to the Estate in the sum of $130 thousand dollars with 6% interest.
