Today Mortis also discussed the most recent prior case of a man who perished inside his home. Omar Barahona of Corozal died in a fire less than two weeks ago. The family suspects he may have gone to sleep under the influence - and Mortis says that was definitely a factor:

Kenneth Mortis, Fire Station Supervisor

"What we learned from Corozal again it's almost similar to this one that particular fellow again had been socializing somewhere and had alcoholic beverages in his system again leaving naked flame and he fell asleep and that building caught fire and he succumbed. I really don't know how deep on emphasis we can try to emphasize the importance of having naked flames without being mindful or vigilant of what we are doing regardless of the sex whether y is a male or a female we tend to socialize we tend to have alcoholic beverages and we tend to go home and practice the norm the norm doesn't always work for everybody. It is an unfortunate situation that we have lost lives as a result of a fire almost stemming in the same way be mindful of our surroundings. As neighbors keep an eye out I like to believe that I am my neighbors keeper especially if me and my neighbor has a good neighborly relationship going on there is nothing wrong with me trying to look out for my neighbor."
