We've recently been reporting on a credit card scam carried out by call center employees.

Today the PM weighed in. He said that the authorities need to go after the scammers before they cause irreparable harm to the BPO sector, which employs almost 20 thousand Belizeans.

And though it's the UDP's Lee Mark Chang who initially sounded the alarm, the PM says Chang hasn't reached out to him yet on the matter.

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We have to go after anyone that's scamming not only our citizens but people outside of Belize from these BPOs. We have to be grateful to the BPO industry that presently they are providing more than 20,000, salaries have surpassed 150 million dollars a year so we have to protect them, we have to ensure that they can feel safe to operate here. so whatever the problem may be, we have to look into it. Lee Mark Chang, I consider him a friend although we're from opposite sides but he has never called me and complained about it and what we can do. I know one or two persons have spoken to me that they're spoken to the police but I think we need to put more in place how is it that we can go after these scammers and we need to go after them to the full extent of the law."
