And while government tinkers with the industry regulations possibly to make way for a monopoly - that would be in the short term - because the whole reason for this so called - BTL/SMART consolidation is the arrival of Elon Musk's internet service provider, Starlink.
They say BTL can't compete - but right now STARLINK doesn't provide service in Belize - and the license it received one year ago from the PUC limits operations in Belize to "Emergency Situations and Unserved or Underserved Areas".

"I don't know, you'd have to check with the PUC but what we said in Cabinet is that if somebody applies for their services from Starlink that we should allow them to have it if it is not in an area where they have access to the services that Belizean companies provide."
Legal observers tell us that the limited Starlink license could likely easily be expanded.
