General Loria's tenure was longer than usual and we asked the former Minister of Defense Oscar Mira why. He explained:

"For the Belize Defence force, one we have a set amount of years so that there's four years of command, and after four years of command, then you are required to relinquish your command. And, even if for no reason, the age of 55. So we go by years of service on the years of command. However, the Prime Minister who appoints the commander and the commandant of the Coast Guard can always, as he sees fit, give you extension of command."

Has it always been four years? Because I know previously there were persons that served three years.

"It has always been, up to the Prime Minister, actually, but up to four years."
