A 4-month-old baby is tonight at the KHMH in critical condition after being critically injured during a fight between young adults.

Baby Ashly Chimilio's mother, 20 year old Amanda Sho today told us that she was at a Halloween Fair in Libertad village on Saturday night when a young man started calling her brother names over the public address system. The petty name calling erupted into violence at around 9:30 and that's when she and her baby were caught in the middle of a stone-throwing brawl.

Amanda Sho, Ashly’s Mother
“And it was by crowd you know, not by one they came in. Some of them had sticks and some big iron on them to whap out them. So then when that stopped, his mother in law came out and scolded the boy and then they started to stone the house. I stayed a whole hour and then my brother said don’t worry they already went home to sleep. So I told my little sister and my next friend and my three little brother to let’s go home.”

[Crying] “I was going home that night with my baby good in my hand and I dressed him up for Halloween. I didn’t expect this would happen to my baby.”

Alfonso Noble,
But what happened? Somebody attacked her?

Amanda Sho,
“Yes they attacked us because they were right by the field. My brother told me they weren’t going to go fight again because they had already stopped the fighting. I asked my brother if he was sure these boys wouldn’t come back after him and he said no because the crowd, and the boy who belted my baby in the head, had already passed. But then one of my little brothers said that looked fishy because when they were by the school they were talking big and throwing a lot of phrases that they were going to beat up my brother and a lot of thing. So when we going home right by Libertad field, they have a shop Ms. Nidy, and they were just waiting for us to pass that street because if anything we could have ran to avoid something happening. But they were just waiting for us to pass. We just see all of them like ants, we don’t know where they were coming from, I just saw stones and sticks started to fly. When I looked I saw the same boy who was fighting with my brother, stone my baby in the head.”

Alfonso Noble,
With what?

Amanda Sho,
“With a stone. When I turned I just felt something wet on my hand and I started to bawl and say ‘my God you killed my pickney.’ My baby’s eyes were going a way like he already died on me. I ran with him and didn’t know what to do. You know what it is like for me to see my baby punishing. I don’t know what those boys were thinking. They saw that I had this pickney in my hand. I don’t know what they were thinking. They didn’t care about anything. I can’t say he didn’t mean to do it. He meant to do it because I told the boy before...when I saw those other boys I just told them lets go because those boys are punks and they just ran. And when I was trying to hold my baby and it was there he caught him with the stone. And back there is red too. This is my last daughter. She is punishing right here and that is nothing nice.”

Sho says that her baby will need surgery to repair damage she sustained to her head that was fractured from the impact of the stones. Police in Corozal have since detained three young men and they are being held pending charges.
