So what do the police make of this extended rash of violence across the city? Well this evening we spoke to Inspector Oscar Puga, Deputy Commander at CIB and he told us what police know about what's behind the shootings.
Inspector Oscar Puga, Deputy Commander CIB
"Police received information primarily about a shooting on West Street, this was about 11 am this morning. Police responded to that area, the victim had already been transported to the KHMH with two gunshot wounds to the chest area. Intial investigations reveal that the person who was the victim, one Marlon Fisher 25 years old, apparently he received gunshot wounds on West Street in the vicinity of West and Prince Streets. He managed to make his way to the Sub-Station in the Mesop Area where he reported the matter to the police. Shortly after he collapsed and the police transported him to the KHMH where he underwent surgery this afternoon."
"At about 2:05 pm this afternoon, we received another information of yet another shooting where police responded to the area of West Street where a victim, Stanley Coleman, was transported to the KHMH with a gunshot to the left side of the neck. Information received, which is very sketchy at this point, was that he might have had a verbal misunderstanding with a another male person who has been detained since for questioning and I wish not to disclose that identity at this moment."
Keith Swift,
We there also was a police involved shooting.
Inspector Oscar Puga,
"Yes at about 2:17 pm this afternoon there was information received by the police of gunshots heard in the Rocky Road Plues Street Area. Upon response by the police, the police informed a civilian stop so that they could conduct a search however that person did not. Instead of doing so he tried to flee the area, the police pursued and fired a shot at this person which caught him in the right calf area."
Keith Swift,
Was a gun found?
Inspector Oscar Puga,
"Initial investigations and interviews by the officers is that yes they saw a weapon with this person however searches made on the person, after he was apprehended, and searches in the area were unsuccessful in finding a weapon."
Keith Swift,
Could the police have been mistaken?
Inspector Oscar Puga,
"At this point it is too premature to say that."
The police officer who shot the young suspect remains on duty but is being investigated by the PD's Internal Affairs Department.
