A Running W deliveryman and his sideman had a close call with death at this afternoon. Between 12 and 12:30 today, driver for Running W Meats Jose Martinez was in the St. Martin's De Porres area near the Government Complex Building making a delivery at Ying Ying Chinese Store when he saw his sideman, who was outside the truck, being accosted by two men who were trying to rob him.
Martinez went to help his sideman, and that's when one of the men pointed a handgun at him and fired three shots. One of the bullets grazed Martinez's left cheekbone and, as the jackers sped off on bicycle, the sideman put Martinez into the truck, took the wheel and took him to the KHMH.
It was a very close class, a difference of centimeters between life and death, but he had no serious injury and was released this evening. Police have detained two suspects, but no charges have been laid up to newstime this evening.
We should note that 14 months ago on May 13, 2004, another deliveryman Hilberto Aragon was assaulted at the same store, at almost the same time of day. He was shot in the chest and died on the spot. Two men were arrested for that crime.
