Armed thieves targeted a government office this weekend. But what were they looking for at the Fisheries Department? Our news team found out.
Jules Vasquez Reporting,
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on Princess Margaret Drive - just another government office, but on Saturday morning, a gunman left his mark here in the lobby leaving two bullet holes The main struggle happened here where security guard Rolando Ayala was sitting at this desk.
Rolando Ayala,
"Two young men entered. One of them held me up with a gun and told me to lay on the ground flat and they started to tape with up with duct tape."
And while he was gagged and bound on the floor, what the pair of assailants didn't know was that armed security officer, 48-year-old Randolph Coleman was sleeping in a nearby room. He heard the commotion and opened the door.
Rolando Ayala,
"He opened the door wide and then he closed it but as he was finished they fired a shot at him."
That shot hit here, just inches from Coleman's face as he hurriedly slammed the door shut. Coleman's appearance spooked them and they ran off.
Rolando Ayala,
"They started to fire into the building, they fired two shots."
Those shots left their mark in the wall and door, but when they ran off a passing police patrol caught 21-year-old Everal Gray at the corner of Princess Margaret Drive and Baymen Avenue. Police found a loaded chrome 9mm pistol nearby. So what could they have wanted from a government office since they had no getaway car, and in fact, one of them didn't even have shoes:
Rolanda Ayala,
"I don't know what those boys wanted because no money was left here, unless they wanted to break into the building."
Police recovered duct tape, a pair of slippers, and a flashlight from the scene. 21-year-old Everal Gray remains detained and police are looking for his accomplice.
