This evening it took a jury less than one-hour to convict him and even less time for the Chief Justice to sentence 28-year-old Stephen Castillo for attempting to rape a woman at knifepoint in her home. We first reported the bizarre incident in October of 2004.
The victim told police that Castillo broke into her home, tied her to the bed, put on a condom, and placed a knife at her throat. She fought off Castillo and ran for safety. Police found a naked Castillo hiding in the victim's yard and he was charged with attempted rape, aggravated burglary, and harm.
Chief Justice Abudali Conteh sentenced Castillo to 10 years for aggravated burglary, 8 years for attempted rape, and one year for the harm. The sentences are to run concurrently so Castillo will spend 10 years in jail. Castillo was undefended and at his request, sentence was passed immediately.
