Over the past 10 years, the KHMH has been the only medical facility in Belize offering intensive care services to newborns who would not have been able to survive without very specialized care. And now the KHMH is planning to have those children return to the place and the medical professionals that shepherded them though those dim days. It's a reunion of sorts, and head of the Pediatric Department at the KHMH, Dr. Victor Rosado, says that it is a way for the KHMH to follow up on their patients' development as well as fraternize with those who formed a bond with these very special children, many of them who were never supposed to have even survived in the first place.

Dr. Victor Rosado,
"We would like to see all our babies who were born with three pounds or less that have come through Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, we'd like to have a reunion to see how they have been doing to get together a system and at the same time have some fun together. These babies are premature babies. One thing is that they've spent from one week to sometime two to three months at the KHMH and therefore a strong bond is sometimes created between the newborn and staff, doctors and nurses, so we would enjoy a lot to see them. Also, premature babies have a high risk of developmental problems and so we would like to see them firsthand to see how they are doing in school, to see how they are coping. That would give us a lot of information for us to assess how we are doing things here in our intensive care unit. It's a way of objectively assessing the work that we are doing. Obviously time and medicine keeps on evolving and as we get more modern equipment and we get a better understanding of how to deal with newborns here at Karl Heusner, more and more of these babies and even the smaller ones are now surviving but the drawback of that is that the younger and the smaller ones are the ones with higher risks of having problems and so we would like to have a reunion and see them and assess our work that we are doing here."

The reunion is planned for February 2nd at the KHMH Pediatric Ward.
