Last night, Benque Viejo police shot a Guatemalan who was smuggling marijuana across the border. Around 8:00 last night, a pair of Benque police officers were on patrol near the Mopan River when they saw a man walking on the bank with a loaded knapsack on his back. They stopped him and found a kilo of marijuana in the sack. And while they had the weed - when police tried to arrest the 33-year-old Guatemalan, he ran off and stoned one of the officers in the face with a rock.
The other officer went for his gun - and he claims that the Guatemalan tried to take it from. During the struggle, the gun discharged and hit the Guatemalan in the leg. Both he and the injured officer were taken to the hospital where the officer's injuries were classified as harm. The Guatemalan is still in the hospital pending a battery of charges that will be laid on him once he is well enough to be released.
