She told the court she was shoplifting to eat and pay rent, but Magistrate Sharon Fraser told Shirley Welcome those are two things she won't have to worry about for the next year. 53-year-old Welcome was arrested after she was caught red handed stealing 2 half gallon bottles of one barrel rum and a tin of Wood and Dunn Creamery Butter from Esso Gas Station.
In court today Welcome pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and told Magistrate Sharon Frazer that she was stealing the items because she needs to eat and pay her rent. In response Frazer told her that she will not have to worry about rent and food and then sentenced her to 1 year in prison.
This is Welcome's thirteenth conviction for theft. She was released from prison only two weeks ago.
