This afternoon, Corozal police burnt down a one-acre weed field with 1,500 plants ranging in height from 4 to 7 feet. But the weed destruction is not the news in this story; it's the fight that the weed growers put up to defend their harvest. After 1:00 this morning, Corozal police got information that a ripe marijuana field was in the Consejo Area - two miles east of Corozal town. Officers moved in before dawn, but when they got there, they got a taste of what they least expected: two Hispanic men with shotguns opened fire on them. Police returned fire but retreated when Constable Joseph Gilharry was shot in the shoulder and neck area.
He was sprayed with pellets from a distance, but despite his injury Gilharry managed to make the 15-minute walk out of the bushes. He is now in a stable condition at the Orange Walk Hospital. Police returned with BDF and combed the area, but found no sign of the shotgun fair. They did find sleeping bags, and foodstuff and those have been checked for forensic evidence.
