A 16-year-old Dangriga girl is recovering in the Southern Regional Hospital after a 36-year-old man shot her - out of what investigators say was "pure simpleness".
At midday yesterday, James Bennett was talking to a 14 year old and 16 year old Maybeth wade on Stanley Drive in Dangriga Town. From what police have been able to find out, the young ladies were telling him that his licensed 9 millimeter pistol was a toy. To prove that it was real, he took it out and cranked it. But, when he did that, he accidentally fired the gun and hit the 16-year-old Wade in her ankle. She's recovering in the hospital and should be released tomorrow, but her mother has told police she wants to bring charges against him.
Independently, police will charge him for negligent use of a firearm, discharging a firearm in public and grievous harm. They have confiscated his gun and are holding it pending forensic review. His license is also under review.
