Before noon today, gunshots rang out in the lake Independence area. 20-year-old Sherwin Locke had been shot to the head in the area of Lawrence Avenue. We were on the scene shortly after. And while residents, fearing for their own safety would not speak to us, here's what Alfonso Noble found out.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
Shortly after 11 this morning 24 year old Sherwin Locke was here on Lawrence Avenue in the St. Martin's de Porres area when he was accosted by a gunman. The man who had a black rag over his face had apparently been waiting in this bushy area and when Locke came by he pulled out a gun and began to chase him. Crime scene markers show the trail of expended and live rounds showing the path that Locke took to escape the gunman. He managed to make it to this mangrove area. It is here that he fell as he had been shot in the head.
Residents in the area say they heard no less that 6 shots and when they came into the area they found an injured Locke. He was carried out of the mangroves and put into a police vehicle and taken to the KHMH. Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid says at this point police have not yet determined why Locke was shot.
G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
"At this point we don't know exactly why he was there, who he was there to see, or if somebody might have lured him to that area. All of that is being looked at but to answer your question, no we don't know exactly why he was there at that time and point. We have detained a couple of persons and are questioning some other people and we believe we have an idea who it might have been but we certainly do need assistance from the community. If there are persons out there with information, we are asking them to please contact the police."
Locke was shot twice to the forehead and once to the arm. He is on life support at this hour. We note that Locke has a colorful past with the police and since 2005 has been arrested for involvement with various robberies.
