He is the head of the Poultry Association and the PUP's Cayo North East Standard Bearer but that didn't save Orlando Habet from a beating at the hands of a couple Custom's officers at the Western Border. The stories differ based on who you talk but these graphic images of Habet's badly bruised and swollen face tell quite the tale. What is for certain is that Habet was at the Western Border on Saturday morning waiting to speak with the Chairman of one of the Duck Run Communities in his constituency.
He told The Belize Times he was waiting for someone when he got into an altercation with a Custom's officer who told him to move from the area. Habet refused and that's when things got ugly. He says he was tackled by two officers, one of whom was armed. But more than being tackled, Habet claims he was hit in his face, neck, and chest area.
The account in the Guardian Newspaper is that a belligerent Habet simply had to be subdued. He was arrested but later released. He is home now and says his nose has been displaced and his lower eye orbit has been fractured. He is currently seeking treatment in Guatemala. He says he plans to sue. The Custom's Department says it's investigating.
