Three young men escaped from the youth section of the Hattieville Prison and authorities say a sleeping warden is to blame.
At 2:30 on Sunday morning, teenagers Miguel Perez and Francisco and Sergio Itzab clambered through a narrow opening between the beams for the ceiling and the roof. After that, they still had to cut the chain link fence, with a guard nearby. But the guard was so sound asleep that even calls from the other inmates telling him to wake up were of no use. He snoozed right through as the young men climbed over the fence.
Miguel Perez is from Carmelita while the Itzab brothers are from San Pedro. One is convicted and the other two were on remand, all for minor offences. They are not considered especially dangerous but anyone seeing them is asked to call the police or 0-800-922-TIPS.
