The University of Belize awarded diplomas to 412 graduates on Sunday at the main campus in Belmopan. The graduates received Bachelors' and Associates Degrees in about 40 disciplines governed by four faculties. The theme for the graduation was "education…a safe Investment." Giving the commencement address, Senator Godwin Hulse said that the investment can only be safe if education is used for the community's good.
Senator Godwin Hulse,
"The investment placed in you is only safe when you discover how to utilize it. The goal of education is not mastery of the subject matter but mastery of ones own person. The truth is that the world does not need more successful people as defined by this culture but it desperately in need, ladies and gentlemen, of more peacemakers, more healers, more restorers, more storytellers, more lovers, and more people who have compassion.
Be aware that the investment made in you by your parents and guardians or the society was not to be selfish and privatized for the means of making a living for yourself but was intended to be a gift for society to bring your fellow man out of the darkness and bliss of ignorance and into the light of truth and happiness. This is the measure of real success.
Let me remind you that the safest investment is when you walk out of here this afternoon thinking that I will do the best I can and utilize my education to improve this jewel, bring it back to a place we can love, bring it back to a place where there are families and no more single parent homes, or minimize it, bring it back to a place where crime is declining rapidly, bring it back to a place where there is political balance, bring it back to a place where there is no corruption in government and in public life, bring it back to a place where we can all be dignified and do it for Belize, do it for God, and do it for your fellowmen. Thank you very much."
The greatest number of graduates came from the Faculty of Management and Social Services.
