A police constable is lucky to be alive tonight after he was shot last night. Just after 2:00 am, Constable 941 Moguel was on duty at the checkpoint at mile 3 on the Western Highway when a two door car - with two dark skinned men inside came up on the stop sign. Moguel reports that he was walking over to the car when a passenger in the back seat opened fire, and one of those shots grazed his midsection.
Moguel reports that he fired back but the car sped off. Investigators recovered 9 expended shells from the scene. The men in the car have not been identified or found but police say their investigation continues. We would hope that investigation extends to the reason why an officer was left alone at a deserted checkpoint at 2:00 in the morning.
In their official release, police deny that he was alone, but 7NEWS h as confirmed that he was there by himself which is definitely not in line with standard procedure.
