Later this month Belize will be represented at two international sporting events for children with special needs. 4 athletes leave for the Special Olympics in China on September 26th and 30 athletes will leave for the Central American Games in Guatemala on September 28th. This morning at 6:00, 20 BDF soldiers and police officers left with the 'flame of hope' from San Ignacio and arrived in Belize City at 3 this afternoon where they were joined by the special athletes. Akintade Atkens says the torch run is one way of raising awareness about the Special Olympics.
Akintade Atkens, Director - Special Olympics Belize
"The Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run is a special activity of the Special Olympics designed to mobilize a fraternal group of volunteers, the law enforcement community, to generate awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics activities through the carrying of a lit torch, popularly referred to in Special Olympics as the 'flame of hope.'
We are having a one day torch run event from Cayo to Belize City to generate awareness for these particular games that our athletes will be participating in."
The torch run was a fundraising event. Anyone interested in financially assisting the Belize delegations to the games can contact the Akintade Atkens at the Stella Maris School.
