An agreement signed today between the governments of the United States and Belize should bring some programmes on stream to help prevent and reduce gang related crimes. The Government of Belize will have access to US$110,000 to develop a comprehensive strategy for combating the crime and violence. The agreement was signed between US Charge d’ Affairs Jack Diffly and Belize’s Minister of National Security Carlos Perdomo.
While it has yet to be agreed on what specific programs will be implemented some of the plans include developing a model for precinct policing in high crime areas. There are also plans to partner with non governmental organizations and the conscious development programme to further develop youth at risk programmes. It is expected that by the end of the year some of the plans will have been implemented.
