Law enforcement personnel got a serious scare today when they thought they found the assembly for an improvised explosive device in a piece of mail leaving Belize. The supposed IED – as they are called was found when American Airlines scanned a piece of mail leaving Belize from a King’s Park address and destined for Spain. But late word to 7NEWS shows that it appears to be a false alarm. Police moved quickly to detain the person who was sending it and by this evening he was captured. He explained and illustrated to police that the device, which looks like a pipe bomb assembly, is used as an adaptation to make cars more fuel efficient.
Sounds like a very strange mix up, but that’s the latest word from law enforcement. When law enforcement detected the device, they thought it was a part of an IED but they concluded it was not live and needed another part to be activated. But we stress that this evening, latest information suggests that was a misunderstanding. Police and Customs are still studying it and we’ll have more information on Monday.
