Today gunmen pulled off a daring mid-morning robbery. Two J&B Security guards were transporting money from Alliance Bank to the Fisheries Cooperatives but the money, rumoured to be in the tens of thousands of dollars, never reached its destination because in the middle of Freetown Road on a Friday morning – gunmen pulled off a daring heist. Here’s what happened.
Keith Swift Reporting,
The two J&B employees were driving down Freetown Road in this maroon Toyota Camry when gunmen in two separate cars cornered them and came out with guns blazing.
Joseph Meighan, J&B Security Services
“We were conducting courier services this morning and we were taking the money to an establishment. On Freetown Road two vehicles met one of my company vehicles, one to the back and one to the front, and came out shooting and went with the cash that was on board. There was one to the back, that was a green car, and a white Tracker from the front, came from the opposite direction, stopped right in front of my company vehicle and they came out firing.”
Keith Swift,
What did your employees do?
Joseph Meighan,
“It was so fast. They told me it happened so fast and they decided to jump out. By the time they pulled out their weapons, the guys were already shooting so they just had to take cover in one of the neighboring business places.”
One of the two shots pierced the windshield of the Camry. An eyewitness who was in the area at the time told us off camera that she heard two gunshots.
Witness,
“We heard two gunshots and after that we see a person run down Freetown Road, that’s all I know.”
Keith Swift,
So when you were walking and you heard the shots what did you think was happening?
Witness,
“I didn’t know what it was, I just heard two gunshots like it went bang and then it was a bang again. I didn’t know it was gunshots until I see the person run and I heard it was gunshot.”
That person fleeing the scene was one of the gunmen who jumped into the Camry and attempted to steal it. He didn’t get far and crashed into this fence on Barrack Road. J&B’s owner Joseph Meighan doesn’t how much money was stolen or who did it.
Joseph Meighan,
“You hear rumours and so on but I don’t have any concrete evidence.”
Keith Swift,
Is this a regular route you normally take after you’ve picked up from that bank and you’re taking it to the business place?
Joseph Meighan,
“No we don’t, we have several routes that we normally take for the same purpose.”
Keith Swift,
Could this have been an inside job?
Joseph Meighan,
“I can’t say but its somebody who has been watching and observing and they did their job.”
Police are investigating. As we said, it was the payroll for fisheries, but alternate arrangement were made to pay them.
