23 year old Leroy Gomez was taken to Magistrate’s Court today where he was charged with a total of 13 offences – 3 of them are for rape, 1 is for attempted rape, 2 aggravated assaults upon females, and 6 robberies – all of females, all committed with a knife, and a charge of wounding, also with a knife. His victims are between the ages of 17 and 22 and all the incidents happened in the Collet and Lake Independence areas – and all in the early hours of the morning.
He appeared without the attorney before Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb McKenzie where the prosecutor objected to bail because they fear he will flee. In his own defence, Gomez said that why would he flee when he turned himself into police because he is an innocent man. The Chief Magistrate sided with the prosecutor and denied him bail, which caused Gomez to curse her once he got outside the courtroom.
The session was adjourned until October the 28th and he will remain on remand until then. Police may also charge him for an attack upon a 47 year old woman which happened in June near the cemetery.
