After three years on remand, this afternoon it took a jury less than three hours to acquit Miguel Angel Orrego of murder and manslaughter. He was charged for killing deejay 26 year old Hubert Flashy after a bar brawl in San Pedro on Christmas Eve of 2005. Orrego’s trial started on September 23rd and Senior Crown Counsel Cecil Ramirez called three witnesses but none actually saw Orrego stab Hubert Flashy. In fact the only evidence the prosecution had against Orrego was a caution statement which the jury never got to see because the presiding Judge Adolph Lucas threw it out. Orrego’s attorney Michael Peyrefitte didn’t call any witnesses and the jury began deliberations around mid-day. By 3 pm the verdict was in and 7NEWS was at the courthouse.

With sunglasses and a do-rag on his head, Miguel Angel Orrego left the Supreme Court a free man – after nearly three years on remand. He had just been acquitted of murdering this man: popular San Pedro DJ Hubert Flashy, known as
Heavy D, on December 24th of 2005 outside Big Daddy’s in San Pedro. When we chased him down, Orrego says it is a murder he didn’t commit.

“I was outside the club but I left.”
The caution statement was thrown out because Sergeant Dennis Myles who was interrogating flashy also took the statement. Under the judge’s rules that is not allowed. It’s of note that the deceased, Hubert Flashy was the brother of Richard Flores, the suspect charged two weeks ago for throwing a grenade into a crowd on carnival day. Their mother Gaylia Flashy told us she’ll leave this verdict in the hands of God.
