A mother was killed in a terrible traffic accident outside San Ignacio Town on Friday night. Victor Moreno along with his common-law wife 46 year old Leticia Garcia and their 12 year old son were heading home to Unitedville after grocery shopping in San Ignacio Town when they were involved in a three car accident between miles 64 and 65. Victor Moreno’s Ford Escort crashed head on into an Isuzu pickup driven by Rafael Caranza in the opposite direction. Police say that Caranza was overtaking a tow head and caused the collision. After crashing head on into the Isuzu pickup, the Ford Escort spun out of control and crashed into the side of the tow head. Leticia Garcia was killed on the spot. Her sister Brinnette Leal received the shocking news a short while later.

Brinnette Leal, Sister of Accident Victim
“They went to do some grocery shopping in San Ignacio and they say they were returning back to their home and I think they had an accident and

I don’t really know much more about it. I think she died a little after, that is what her husband told me.”

Keith Swift,
“Does it upset you that it appears the driver might have been drinking?”

Brinnette Leal,
“Well that is what they say that he was drunk but I am not angry because we always have people that drink and drive and they say don’t drink and drive but they still do the opposite of it so they will pay the consequences. It is not easy to stand here talking about my sister.”

Keith Swift,
“Not something you expected you’d ever have to do?”

Brinnette Leal,
“No never. I never thought it. It is very difficult on the family, very difficult. It is not easy, it is my sister and it is mother’s daughter and it is one of us that passed away. I wouldn’t say it is easy but we need to be strong for the situation to deal with everything and to be strong for her husband and her two sons and also for my mother. I need to be strong for her.”

Victor Moreno suffered a fractured pelvis while the couple’s twelve year old son suffered a fractured leg. The driver of the pickup Rafael Caranza was today charged in the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court with manslaughter by negligence. More charges could be forthcoming pending the result of a blood alcohol test. The driver of the tow head Hector Pech escaped without injury.
