The so called Rock Park on the Princess Margaret Drive seafront - it's one of the nice spots in the city to breeze out on any given day - but it almost turned deadly for two female students yesterday afternoon.
24 year old Eglea Villanueva and 18 year old Jiannie Moguel - both students - were sitting on the seawall when they were approached by a hispanic man who grabbed Villanueva by her hair, put a knife to her throat and demanded that they both hand over all their belongings. Villanueva handed over her cell phone and her gold chain, while Moguel handed over her gold chain and a knapsack containing her cell phone. The robber then dashed off in the direction of A- Street with Villanueva in hot pursuit. His luck ran out when a police mobile patrol appeared out of nowhere and apprehended him, stolen items and knife still in hand. Police said the man identified as 27 year old Honduran national, Cesar Castro Romero, told them he robbed the women because his wife was sick and needed the money. Romero who is a Valley Of Peace Resident was today charged with 2 counts of robbery when he appeared in the #5 Magistrate's court.
Romero pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that Romero has no legal immigration status in Belize and poses a flight risk. Magistrate Albert Hoare upheld the objection after it was confirmed that Romero is an illegal immigrant. He remanded Romero into custody until December 23rd.
