31 year-old Carlos Castro, an unemployed resident of New Road, is spending his first night of a 7-year sentence after he was convicted of attempt burglary in Magistrate's Court.

According to the arresting officer, who testified for the prosecution in this trial, she caught Castro trying to break into a home on Linda Vista Street.

The officer said that on February 2, 2011, she was on patrol when she saw him with a 14-inch piece of steel with sharp edges trying to pry open one of the doors of the house.

The prosecution even tendered photographs of the damage to the door into evidence. In his defence, Castro told Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith that on that day, he was making a delivery to the house with his cousin who works out of a van.

Chief Magistrate Smith didn't accept his explanation, and as a result, she found him guilty of the offense based on the strength of the prosecution's evidence.

Castro is well known to the police and to the courts, and because he has a $2,000 fine and a $3,000 fine for burglary - both of which he hasn't paid - Chief Magistrate Smith sentenced him to serve 7 years in prison.
