As we told you earlier, there were no shootings over the past weekend - which is the first time in almost two months that we can make such a report.

Of course, the police department is always a little too eager to pat itself on the back - for what may be a happy coincidence - and not necessarily the product of anything the department did.

Press Officer Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood did just that at a press briefing today - linking the brief respite in crime to increased police patrols:..

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer "In Belize City itself we didn't have any major incident reported during the past week, so we believe that the new zoning and effective patrols have effects on crime itself. We are saying that our patrols are working and they will continue to work and we intend to bring peace and restore safety in the streets of Belize."

And while no one was shot, two men were threatened in two separate events. As Yearwood explained one of those events happened on Saturday night near Belcan Bridge:..

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood - Police Press Officer

"One; Enrique Gongora Jr., an employee of Belize Water Services who reported that on Saturday 30th June at 7:15pm he was driving his car on the Northern Highway and upon reaching the Belcan Bridge a person in a silver Saturn car that was following closely behind him approached him and after trying to overtake his vehicle the person what appears to be a black 9mm handgun and says 'bwai, you di play' and then the person drove off heading towards Central American Boulevard."

"We have detain someone in connection with this incident."

In other police news, there was a fatal traffic accident last night between miles 50 and 51 on the Northern Highway. Around 8:00 pm, 56 year old Isabel Carballo, was walking on the highway when he was hit by a car which sped off. Carballo died on the spot.
