He's a pastor whose day job is a taxi man - but, today, Burrell Boom resident Mark Humes was taken to court for drug trafficking. He says it's the bad luck of picking up a teenager - whom he didn't know had a suitcase-full of weed.
Today, Humes and a 16 year old minor from Corozal were taken to court and charged with drug trafficking. Humes picked the boy and another passenger at the Novelo's Bus Terminal.
Humes dropped off passenger #2 first at the water taxi terminal and she accidentally took the 16 year old's suitcase. When the 16 year old got to his destination and realized what had happened, he dashed back to the water taxi terminal, and scrambled to get back his bag. He hopped back into the cab, but by then police had noticed the youth scrambling about. They intercepted the pair at the corner of Victoria Street. Police searched the suitcase and found 10 pounds of cannabis in the suitcase.
After being detained, the boy gave the police a caution statement accepting responsibility for the drugs, and intended to plea guilty. However, his attorney, Oscar Selgado, advised him against it. Humes also pled not guilty, and they were both offered $1000 bail. The case was adjourned until September.
