A Guatemalan news outlet is reporting an oil spill on the Sarstoon. The news report says that a tanker truck carrying oil crashed at kilometer 325 on the road to Chahal, in Alta Verapaz.
The impact caused the oil tank to rupture, and an unspecified quantity of oil ran off into the Sarstoon which forms the southern boundary between Belize and Guatemala. Now this is a fair distance from Belize, but we could not get comment form the Department of the Environment to find out if the oil will get to Belize's portion of the river.
