We also got a chance to speak with police about this fire. Here's what they had to say about the family's initial suspicion that it was intentionally set:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City

"What police gathered so far is that the persons inside of the residence, Miss Luwiena Garnett, who was occupying one of the structures, she was sleeping when she was awaken by smoke coming from under the house. As a result, she alerted the entire family, who came out and escaped unhurt from the fire. Up to now, the fire department has not established what is the cause of the fire."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"These people are saying that its arson. Do you all have any information that - I know that you are not fire investigators, but do you have any indication that there may have been some personal rivalry, or some beef, which may have motivated someone to do this?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Well, that is something that we are looking at this moment. She had mentioned that the fire came from under the building as the house is elevated a few feet off the ground. And that is what police is looking at this moment, along with the fire department. A definite cause has not been established as yet."

If you would like to aid this family in its time of need, it's not that easy to reach them, because they lost all their phones in the fire. You can visit them at their shop, Miss L Food, Fruits and Vegetables. It's the yellow shop located near the end of Holy Emmanuel Street. Unfortunately, the family is forced to sort of shelter in the shop for the time being.
