Earlier in the news, we told you how the cops detained two of Anthony Mahler's supporters for not adhering to social distancing regulations. They'd been standing in front of Pickstock's nomination center wearing their change agent T-shirts and shouting support for Mahler, but the cops thought that they were much too close. Here's what the commissioner had to say about why they were detained and whether or not others will follow in the coming days.
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police "Yes a few person were arrested for breaching the quarantine regulations and again as I had said, it is important that we adhere to the quarantine regulation with a view to ensure that we contain the further spread of the COVID virus within our communities and so there were people who were not practicing social distance, they were dealt with, there were persons who were not wearing masks, some of them were dealt with but again the arrests do not reflect the amount of violations that were out there and I wish that the police were more forceful in enforcing the regulations because for the most part the police officers were still warning people. I have said the time to warn has come and gone right and we have been on it with the political parties long ahead of today making them understand that we expect that they are going to abide by the quarantine regulations and also ensure that their supporters abide by the regulations and we saw many breaches today from both sides and it is something that we would be looking at, we have a number of photographs that were taken of persons who were in violation and again we try as best as we can to avoid confrontation we know that if we were to make certain arrests out there today the fact that people blood was running hot and they sense that feeling of victory and so forth, we did not want to escalate nothing or to have a confrontation with people and so what I advised the officers to do was to take photographs and videos of persons who were in violations and then we are going to review those between today and tomorrow and we will begin to pull in some people to be charged."
This morning, the Commissioner sent out an internal directive saying "Any political party and or supporters found gathering in groups of greater than 10, and those not practicing social distance must be arrested and charged. While both major political parties have agreed not to have motorcade we must remain vigilant as there might be those who may wish to do so spontaneously. Once this is done, there is nothing in law we can do to stop them " end quote.
