Even though the daily COVID stats from the Ministry of Health and Wellness are still at crisis levels, some of the biggest public safety concerns are for the police.
The department has already taken an especially hard hit from the disease and continues to be forced into at least casual contact with hundreds if not thousands of potentially infected persons. The Minister today called that "its own super spreader event" coming through every single arrest for breaches in quarantine regulations. And at present, there are 160 police officers with active infections.
But the arrests continue - and yesterday the police had to arrest and charge 49 Belizeans for breaking quarantine regulations.
28 were charged with failing to wear a face mask or other face and mouth covering while in public. 9 people were charged with failing to practice social distancing. 8 were charged with engaging in a contact sport when restricted from doing so. And finally, 4 persons were charged with breaching the daily curfew which runs from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
